CatEye Bike lights

As summer turns into fall we need to start preparing for shorter days and may even get caught out for an evening ride in darkness before we get home. That has happened to me already this fall. Having lights on your bike are required by law in most places for just an event. CatEye bike lights may be just the solution for you and I know they work for me.

Bike lights can be divided into the, to be able to see lights and the, to be seen lights. The, to be able to see lights are those that supply a sufficient beam of light to see up the road or down the trail so you can bike safely. These lights are not all the same and the faster you ride, the greater the brightness of your light will need to be. The, to be seen lights are often little blinky lights mounted to the back of the bike so traffic coming up behind you know you’re there. You really need both for night riding.

There are Cat Eye LED bike lights that can be mounted to both the front and rear of your bike so that you can be safe riding at night.

Light Emitting Diodes or LEDs are not only bright but require very little power to operate so they are great for battery powered lights. They also produce very low amounts of heat and are highly impact resistant which makes them very suitable for the rough environment of biking.  On average the life of a LED is approximately one hundred thousand hours or about 10 years of nonstop use. This is much longer than any conventional light bulb could ever last. LEDs look modern and up to date thus giving your bike that stylist look.

Lights truly have developed a lot in the last 20 years. In the mid-80s you might have a 6 watt incandescent headlight or tail light. Today there is a tremendous array of lighting choices available to the night cyclist. Though you may be able to still buy halogen lights, I strongly recommend the LEDs along with rechargeable lithium ion (Li-ion) and nickel cadmium (NiCad) batteries. Normal non rechargeable batteries will also work but you have to constantly replace them and deal with their waste. Li-ion may be pricey but last the longest while NiCad are less expensive but wear down and wear out quicker.
